Accommodation process map

A step-by-step guide to prepare, make a request, participate in the conversation, and track what happens next. Check off what you have done. You decide what to share and who sees it.

1Notice the work barrier

Identify the task, environment, schedule, communication pattern, or other work condition getting in the way. Focus on its impact at work.

Remember: You can start with the work barrier. Your initial request need not include your full personal story.

2Think through possible changes

List practical adjustments that might help you do the work. Keep the outcome you need in view; an alternative may also be effective.

3Make the request

Contact the manager, HR partner, or accommodation contact your workplace identifies. A written request helps keep a clear record. Ask who will handle it and what happens next.

Remember: The request letter can help you start. Review and edit it before sending.

4Take part in the conversation

Discuss the barrier, possible changes, and effective alternatives. Ask what information is needed for a decision, who receives it, and how it will be handled.

5Get the decision and try the plan

Ask for a written decision: what was approved, when it starts, who puts it in place, and when you will review whether it works.

6If it stalls, changes, or is denied

Ask for a clear written reason. Find out which alternatives were considered and what reconsideration or escalation path exists. You may seek a trusted advocate or qualified professional.

Remember: For more documentation, ask what specific question it needs to answer and why. You can ask NDaccommodations about human support or mediation.

7Review and update

Work needs and circumstances can change. Check whether the agreed support is working and reopen the conversation if needed.
